Title: Measurement Induced Gain and Lasing
Speaker: Apan Dinda (Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad)
2025/04/09 16:00 --
We discuss a framework based on the measurement and feedback protocol
where the feedback energy is stored inside the cavity interacting with
a single qubit via Jaynes-Cummings coupling. We include cavity loss as
a repeated interaction model with an imaginary qubit. This can be
thought to model a detector. In this setting, we find that the gain
from the feedback can take the cavity to the lasing regime, with
Poissonian photon distribution. This nonlinear behavior is well
captured within our repeated interaction scheme. On taking the
continuous limit, one obtains a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad
(GKSL) master equation, which, however, is unable to explain long time
Poissonian photon distribution. We further analyze the nature of the
light in the cavity using Glauber's coherence function and Wigner
Quasi-probability distribution.

Tensor categories and quantization for the quantum Hall effect
The aim of this talk is to show that quantization of the Hall
conductance in the infinite plane geometry follows from the finiteness
of the number of the superselection sectors of microscopic quantum
lattice systems. These are equivalence classes of certain
representations of the algebra of observables, which correspond
physically to types of quasi-particle excitations. I will review
aspects of this representation theory, show how it is naturally
described in terms of a certain category, and explain how the Hall
conductance appears within this framework. This is joint work with M.
Corbelli, M. Fraas and Y. Ogata.

Title: Ab initio extended Hubbard interactions
Abstract:
In this talk, I will present my group and coworkers' recent efforts to develop an efficient first-principles calculation method to compute electronic structures, phonon dispersions, and electron-phonon interactions of correlated materials [1-10]. The method can obtain self-consistent on-site and inter-site Hubbard interactions using newly developed position-dependent pseudohybrid functionals [1]. All the interactions can be evaluated within self-consistent loops without serious additional costs such that the method can be as fast as conventional ab initio methods with (semi)local density approximations while its accuracy is comparable to sophisticated methods such as GW approximation [1,3,5-7].
I will demonstrate that the newly developed method can compute accurate quasiparticle bands structures of various materials [1-4], phonon dispersions of correlated insulators [5] and charge-ordered materials [6], energy band splitting owing to spin-orbit coupling [7], charged defects states in oxides [8], ferroelectric properties of perovskite oxides [9] and electron-phonon interactions in transparent oxides [10]. Considering its improved accuracy with low computational costs, our new computational method is expected to contribute massive database-driven high-throughput quantum materials researches.

Abstract:
This year, 2025, the "International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ)," is the 100th anniversary of the "formal" start of quantum mechanics, the description of the microscopic world. 1925 is the year in which Werner Heisenberg and others formulated "matrix mechanics," and physicists began to understand how to accurately predict microscopic phenomena.
In this talk I will describe how quantum mechanics came about, starting with physicists in the late nineteenth century trying to understand the colors of hot metals and other hot objects, noting crucial advances leading to the fully developed wave and matrix quantum mechanics in the mid 1920's, to steps towards understanding real materials, culminating with spectacular applications such as smartphones, scarcely a century later.

The Motion and Deformation of Bubbles in Hele-Shaw Cells
We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation of a bubble in
a Hele-Shaw cell under a uniform background flow at low Reynolds
number. The bubble is flattened into a pancake-like shape, with an
approximately circular profile when viewed from above, and thin liquid
films lie between the bubble and the cell walls. Bubble motion and
deformation are determined by an interplay between the Hele-Shaw viscous
pressure, the pressure drop due to the thin films, and the capillary
pressure due to the in-plane curvature of the apparent bubble boundary.
Numerical and asymptotic results indicate that, with all other
parameters held constant, the in-plane aspect ratio of the bubble varies
non-monotonically with its size, with smaller bubbles being flattened in
the flow direction and larger bubbles being elongated. These theoretical
predictions are validated experimentally, as well as the expected loss
of fore-aft symmetry of the bubble shape due to differences between the
advancing and retreating menisci. New measurements of the bubble
velocity are also shown to agree well with theoretical predictions. The
model is also extended to describe a bubble moving in an inclined cell
due to buoyancy.

Systemic Risk and Shock Propagation in Firm-level Supply Networks
Recent crises and natural disasters (e.g., COVID-19, the Ukraine war, the
2011 tsunami in Japan, and the 2011 flood in Thailand) have highlighted the
vulnerability of corporate supply chains. These events cause significant
economic losses, financial impacts on firms and banks, and supply
shortages. To address this, we introduce the Economic Systemic Risk Index
(ESRI) to measure firms' economic risk within supply networks, calculating
it for 91,595 firms in Hungary. Additionally, we assess systemic risks in
food supply networks using Austria's data (23,001 establishments, 44,730
supply links). Finally, we show that industry-level data can underestimate
economic losses from shocks like COVID-19 by up to 37%, emphasizing the
importance of firm-level analysis.

Martingale for Physicists and Physics of Martingale
Martingale is a property of stochastic processes that has applications in various fields due to its fairness or neutrality. Recently, it have been used in physics in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics beyond the expertise of Brownian motion. In the first half of the talk, we will describe the definition of martingales, then introduce some generic ways to construct martingale processes and introduce some theorems. In the second half of the talk, we will describe our research, which shows that the property of martingales itself exhibits a physical aspect, the equilibrium statistics of classical spins in an external field.

Title:
Abstract:

Graphite thermal Tesla valve
概要:
As electronic devices become increasingly compact and powerful, efficient
thermal management is crucial for performance, reliability, and safety.
This study explores a novel approach to thermal rectification by extending
the concept of the Tesla valve, originally designed for fluid flow, to
solid-state heat conduction in graphite materials.
We utilized isotopically enriched graphite with 13C content reduced from
1.1% to 0.02% to create a solid-state Tesla valve structure. This material
exhibits phonon hydrodynamic behavior, allowing for the formation of phonon
Poiseuille flow [1]. We observed thermal rectification effects of up to 15%
in the temperature range of 25-60 K. The graphite Tesla valve was
fabricated as an air-bridge structure with a thickness of 90 nm and a width
of 4.5 μm to ensure heat flow exclusively within the graphite. Thermal
conductivity measurements were performed on forward and reverse
configurations at various temperatures. Our results demonstrate that the
thermal rectification effect is most pronounced at around 45 K, where the
thermal conductivity in the forward direction is 15.4% higher than in the
reverse direction. This effect was observed only within the temperature
range where phonons exhibit fluid-like properties [2]. This research
represents a significant step towards realizing solid-state thermal
rectification devices by leveraging the hydrodynamic behavior of phonons in
graphite. Developing such thermal management technologies could lead to
substantial advancements in the performance and efficiency of various
electronic devices.

approach*
Yoshitaka Tanimura
Department of Chemistry, Kyoto University

In this short lecture course, I will teach the essence of quantum
dissipative dynamics, which plays essential roles in a variety of physical
processes, such as quantum information theory, quantum thermodynamics,
electronic and vibrational optical spectroscopy in condensed phases,
exciton and electron transfer processes in photosynthesis systems, using
the PowerPoint lecture notes available at the above WWW site.
CONTENTS(1-4回講義部分、4回目以降のセミナー部分はB)
(1) Feynman path integral and Influence Functional
A system-bath model is introduced with some examples from chemistry and
biology. The heat bath is described as a set of harmonic oscillators whose
degrees of freedom can be reduced using a path integral form without the
need for approximation. Thus, the lecture note "Learn Schrödinger, Dirac &
Feynman formalisms in 90 minutes" is used to explain the path integral
formalism from the beginning. Then, the Feynman-Vernon influence functional
(F-V IF) is derived from the unfactorized initial condition by reducing the
bath degrees of freedom. The IF consists of fluctuation and dissipation,
and the thermal equilibrium state is established by these two terms
satisfying the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. This result clearly shows
why the Markov approximation does not hold for quantum noise.
(2) Quantum Fokker-Planck Equation in Hierarchy Form: non-Markovian tests
The quantum heretical Fokker-Planck equations (QHFPE) are derived on the
basis of the IF formalism. The QHFPE can deal with non-Markovian noise even
at very low temperature. This ensures that not only the thermal equilibrium
state, but also the dynamical process towards the equilibrium state is
correctly described, even when interacting with a non-Markovian and/or
non-perturbative heat bath.
(3) Hierarchy Equations of Motion (HEOM) for discretized energy state
The reduced hierarchy equations of motion for system with discrete
energy levels are derived using a coherent state representation for the
path integrals. The distributed source code, "nonMarkovian2009", will be
demonstrated and examined.
(4) Anomaly of quantum master equation: positivity condition is broken due
to Markov assumption
Anomalous feature of reduced equations of motion under Markovian
assumption is illustrated. To demonstrate this point, we derive quantum
master equation, quantum Fokker-Planck equation, Redfield equation,
time-convolutionless(TCL) Redfield equations typically based on (i) the
factorized approximation, (ii) the perturbation approximation, (iii) the
rotating wave approximation, and (iv) Markovian assumption that is valid
only at high or very low temperature conditions. As pointed out by Leggett
et al. and Weiss et al., these equations, derived on the basis of an ohmic
heat bath, have anomalies regardless of the coupling strength between the
system and the bath, indicating that it is impossible to describe correct
temperature effects from such formalisms.

(5) Hierarchical Fokker-Planck Equation for quantum transport problem:
dissipative tunneling
The effects of fluctuations and dissipation in transport processes are
studied using the quantum hierarchical Fokker-Planck equations (QHFPE). For
a ratchet problem, we find that when the tunneling effect is dominant, the
ratchet potential is effectively lower and the ratchet current decreases.
For a resonant tunneling problem, we rigorously evaluate the tunneling
current for different bias voltages. We find that in the negative
differential resistance regime, hysteresis and plateau-like behavior are
observed due to self-current oscillation. We also derive gauge-invariant
QHFPE and study the effect of gauge fields in Aharonov-Bohm rings.
(6) Modeling, Calculating, Analyzing Multidimensional Vibrational
Spectroscopies: HEOM Approach
Recently, two-dimensional (2D) IR, IR-Raman, and THz-Raman spectroscopy has
been developed to investigate the intermolecular and intramolecular modes
of liquid. We calculate such 2D spectroscopy signals for water using an
equilibrium-non-equilibrium hybrid MD simulation algorithm originally
developed for 2D Raman spectroscopy. These signals are analyzed in terms of
anharmonicity and nonlinear polarizability of vibrational modes using a
Brownian oscillator (BO) model with linear-linear (LL) and square-linear
(SL) system-bath interactions from the hierarchal equations of motion
(HEOM) approach for a non-Markovian noise. All of the characteristic 2D
profiles of the signals obtained from MD are reproduced using the LL+SL BO
model, indicating that this model captures the essential features of the
inter-molecular motion.
(7) Non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics described as intensive &
extensive variables
We formulate a thermodynamic theory applicable to both classical and
quantum systems on the basis of the HEOM formalism. These systems are
depicted as thermodynamic system–bath model consists of multiple heat baths
at time-dependent inverse temperatures \beta(t) capable of handling
isothermal, isentropic, thermostatic, and entropic processes. Our approach
is based on the dimensionless (DL) minimum work principles for intensive
work, \tilde{W}^{int| (t)\ge ∆\Xi(t)=\beta^{qst}(t)∆F^{qst}(t) and for
extensive work \tilde{W}^{ext}(t)\ge
\Phi^{qst}(t)=\beta^{qst}(t)∆G^{qst}(t), where \Xi(t) and \Phi(t) are the
Planck and Massieu potentials derived from quasi-static (qst) changes of
intensive and extensive external perturbations and temperature. These
inequalities are the generalization of the Kelvin-Plack statement of the
second law of thermodynamics. Through use of the above we evaluate the
Massieu–Planck potentials as entropic potentials and the Helmholtz–Gibbs
potentials as free energy. On the basis of these results, we further
develop non-equilibrium thermodynamic potentials expressed in terms of
non-equilibrium extensive and intensive variables in time derivative form.

演題:How to unitarize the evolution of non-Hermitian systems?
For almost 75 years, the general solution for the Schrödinger equation was assumed to be generated by a time-ordered exponential known as the Dyson series. We study the property of unitarity of this solution for various types of Hamiltonians. Then, we motivate and explore a new approach for solving the Schrödinger equation. In the proposed formalism the corresponding dynamics is shown to be manifestly unitary, even in the case of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.

題目:Uniform asymptotic smoothing of the higher-order Stokes phenomenon
概要:For over a century the Stokes phenomenon had been perceived as a discontinuous change in the asymptotic representation of a function. In 1989, Berry demonstrated that it is possible to smooth this discontinuity in broad classes of problems with the pre-factor for the exponentially small contribution switching on/off taking a universal error function form. Following pioneering work of Berk et al. and the Japanese school of formally exact asymptotics, the concept of the higher-order Stokes phenomenon was introduced by Howls et al.,whereby the ability for the exponentially small terms to cause a Stokes phenomenon may change, depending on the values of parameters in the problem, corresponding to the associated Borel plane singularities transitioning between Riemann sheets. Until now, the higher-order Stokes phenomenon has also been treated as a discontinuous event. In this talk, I will show how the higher-order Stokes phenomenon is also smooth and occurs universally with a pre-factor that takes the form of a new special function, based on a Gaussian convolution of an error function. To illustrate the practical application of this theory, I will use the telegraph PDE as an example. I also provide a rigorous discussion of the effect of the smoothed higher-order Stokes phenomenon on the individual terms in the asymptotic series, where the additional contributions appear pre-factored by an error function. This work is a collaboration with Christopher J. Howls, John R. King, and Adri B. Olde Daalhuis.

題目:On WKB solutions for the differential system satisfied by an oscillatory integral
概要:This talk considers WKB solutions for the differential system satisfied by an oscillatory integral. Under suitable assumptions, by examining the relationship between the WKB solutions and the integral, we show that the Borel summability of the WKB solutions is characterized by the Stokes set.
