Title:
Information thermodynamics on causal networks

Abstract:
In recent years, relations between information theory and nonequilibrium
statical physics has been intensively investigated. According to the
recent study of the second law for small systems, the second law seems to
be violated in the presence of the feedback control by Maxwell's demon.
For such case, the second law has been generalized as the equation
including the mutual information that is exchanged between the system and
controller [1]. Although such a relation is applicable to a simple
"feedback control" system, the general theory has been elusive for more
complex cases such as "autonomous interacting systems" and "time-delayed
feedback control".

Here, we study a system that is involved in a complex information flow
induced by multiple other systems [2]. Characterizing the interaction of
multiple systems by causal networks, i.e., Bayesian networks, we obtain a
novel generalization of the second law for subsystem. Our result implies
that the entropy production in a single system in the presence of multiple
other systems is generally bounded by the information flow between these
systems.
